Statewide Police Emergency Network (S.P.E.N.)

All police departments in New Jersey have bases on the S.P.E.N. frequencies. Also selected mobile units and handheld radios are programmed with these frequencies to allow communications between town, county, and state agencies. Towns leave the PL open on the receive side. Some Bergen County police & fire departments use SPEN 2 & SPEN 4 for tactical use.

National VHF/UHF/800MHz Frequencies

The "V-Tac" and "U-Tac" frequencies are new nationwide interoperability channels.   They are narrowband only and interoperability is the primary use for these channels.  They specifically are not to be used for  communications internal to one agency but rather for multiple agencies, be they neighboring towns or from different parts of the country to  talk to each other even if they don't have any other common channels. Agencies make contact on the calling frequency and then switch to a "Tac" channel to communicate.
